Family types

Types of family

  • Authoritarian: high control & low warmth. Parents: highly directive, more controlling, show less warmth, mantain order, discourage debates, are more distance.

                  • Permissive/Laissez-Faire: low control $ high warmth. Parents: make fewer demands, little discipline, avoid confrontation, and let kids do whatever they want.

                                            • Rejecting/Neglecting (indiferent): low control & low warmth. Parents: don't organize, don't have strucure, neglect their children, may be overwhelmed by real problems: illness or poverty, don't pay attention to their sons.

                                            • Authoritative (democratic): high control & high warmth. Parents: flexible but firm, mantain control and disciplne but show some reason and flexibility, allow a give-and-take, promote responsability, cooperation and self-regulation.

                                            The 3 theories of Love

                                            1. Rubin's theory states that there are 3 elements of love:
                                            • Caring- valuing the other person needs as much as your own. i.e. If he is happy=i'm happy.

                                            • Attachment- the need to receive care, approval and physical contact from your partner.

                                            • Intimacy- sharing of thoughts, desires, and feelings.

                                            2. Hatt Field's theory states that there are 2 types of love:

                                            • Compassionate love- when the relationship is based in: respect, attachment, trust and its mutual.

                                            • Passionate love- when the relationship is based in: intense emotions, sexual attraction and affection.

                                            3. The relationship pyramid

                                            • You need to follow the pyramid from the bottom to the top, if you start from the top then you could damage your...
                                            1. Physical health (STD, unwanted pregnancy).
                                            2. Emotional health, for don't saying NO, or have patience.
                                            3. Social health, work on your reputation, if you are a model to your brother/sister.

                                            Freedom and its limitations

                                            Freedom

                                            Types of freedom

                                            • Fundamental freedom- knowing i'm free.

                                            • Psychological freedom- the ability to choose between different options.

                                            • Moral freedom- knowing the consequences of my choices, the better choice the more freedom. i.e. If I chose to smoke= i'll be a slave of the cigarette.

                                            • Social/Political freedom- the capacity for every person to get involved in social and political life without prohibitions.

                                            • Responsible freedom- I'm responsible of what I do, for example taking notes, sitting in the front in class, come or no to classes, etc.

                                            Limitations

                                            Types of limitations

                                            • Physical limitations: we need air, food and water to survive.

                                            • Psychological limitations: we can not want and know everything at the same time.

                                            • Moral limitations: actions that we want to do, but we can't do them. i.e. killing someone.
